Two new services coming in 2023.

Updated: Dec 19, 2022

Separation Preparation and Flat-Fee Family Mediation will help divorcing Toronto parents manage costs while they organize life in separate homes.

Over a decade ago, Early Neutral Consultation was the name given to a one-time information service for separating/divorcing spouses. It was a great idea with a cryptic name. Building on the idea but clarifying the purpose I will be offering Separation Preparation services to one or both separating spouses. Clients will get the benefit of having their pressing questions answered and they will know where and who to turn to for help.

This one-time, pay-as-you-go service will be an ideal opportunity to explain legal terms, identify resources for urgent problems, and share child-related information. No two consultations will be alike, but common questions will likely come up. Here are some that I have anticipated:

  • Do I need a lawyer and if so, how do I find the right one?

  • How will we tell our children?

  • Who can answer questions about money?

  • How is child support calculated?

  • Will I have to go to court or to mediation?

  • What if I don't feel safe at home?

  • What is a parenting plan?

  • How do I know if my teen needs therapy?

  • What is a separation agreement?

  • What is Collaborative Family Law?

My hope is that with understandable and accurate information early in the separation and divorce process, parents will understand their children's needs, and their own rights and responsibilities. They will start out on a path that suits their goals with the best professionals to help them meet their objectives.

The second new opportunity I will be offering is flat-fee family mediation services to parents in the greater Toronto area. Given our economic climate and the financial uncertainty of starting a separation, parents will benefit from knowing the costs and payment options for mediation services upfront. They will be better able to plan their expenses and be focused on reaching a resolution during their scheduled sessions. For families who select this service option, I hope they will have some certainty in an unpredictable time. Details on the two flat-fee family mediation packages will be ready in January. If you offer flat fee mediation services let me know how it is working for you and your clients.

I am almost ready to say farewell to 2022 and look forward to meeting 2023 with optimism and focus. I wish you a healthy holiday season and look forward to connecting in the new year.
